The proper abbreviation for “Japanese” is JPN, not “jap”. “Jap” is an ethnic slur that was used in World War II, and it stings a lot to see it even if we know if the person using it has no bad intentions and just is not informed. Please take care to use the proper abbreviation! And please correct anyone you see using the incorrect abbreviation! Thank you!

acceptable: JPN, JA, JP

not acceptable: Jap

DO NOT DO THE THING.

Reblogging because I know that for a few of my followers, English is not their first language and they may perhaps not know this. It’s important not to be ignorant.

A small list of random ass sites I’ve found useful when writing:

  • Fragrantica: perfume enthusiast site that has a long list of scents. v helpful when you’re writing your guilty pleasure abo fics
  • Just One Cookbook: recipe site that centers on Japanese cuisine. Lots of different recipes to browse, plenty of inspiration so you’re not just “ramen and sushi”
  • This comparing heights page: gives you a visual on height differences between characters
  • A page on the colors of bruises+healing stages: well just that. there you go. describe your bruises properly
  • McCormick Science Institute: yes this is a real thing. the site shows off research on spices and gives the history on them. be historically accurate or just indulge in mindless fascination. boost your restaurant au with it
  • A Glossary of Astronomy Terms: to pepper in that sweet terminology for your astrophysics major college au needs

Adding to this since I’m working on a shifter au one-shot:

More:

  • Cocktail Flow: a site with a variety of cocktails that’s pretty easy to navigate and offers photos of the drinks. You can sort by themes, strengths, type and base. My only real annoyance with this site is that the drinks are sometimes sorted into ~masculine~ and ~feminine~ but ehhhh. It’s great otherwise.
  • Tie-A-Tie: a site centered around ties, obviously. I stumbled upon it while researching tie fabrics but there’s a lot more to look at. It offers insight into dress code for events, tells you how to tie your ties, and has a section on the often forgotten about tie accessories

Even more:

Because compiling data is a thing that I do sometimes, and making things pretty is a thing I do all the time, here’s a nerdy Pokémon infographic breaking down the distribution of types among the different generations.

Interestingly:
• Water is far and away the most common type, yet the generation that added the most new Pokémon (Gen V) has the lowest number of water Pokémon.
• Gen I has half of all poison Pokémon. HALF. The next closest percentage is 30% of all dark Pokémon in Gen V.
• Every generation – even tiny little Gen VI – has the most of at least one type (some are tied for most).

Guys, the first images of Irma’s level of devastation are coming out of Barbuda and it’s heartbreaking. The President of Barbuda says that 90% of the island is uninhabitable, upwards of 60% of the TOTAL population are now homeless because the hurricane destroyed virtually every building and home on the island, and that the estimated damage is valued at no less than $200 million dollars. That’s money a small island like that doesn’t have. They’re saying it’s going to take years to rebuild and Hurricane Jose is right behind Irma on the same path which means they could be hit twice. This is just one of the islands being affected.

Please, show up for the Caribbean like you did for Houston. There is no safety net for any of these islands including mine. They’ll rely entirely on foreign aid. Find local charities or global trustworthy charities (NOT the Red Cross) and make a donation asking them to aid the Caribbean. There’s whole countries being turned into rubble with no financial means to repair their infrastructures. They’re going to need help.

For the hundreds of people replying or in my inbox asking “Why not the Red Cross?!”:

  1. Google is free.
  2. Why The Red Cross Faces Backlash on Harvey Relief Efforts [Washington Post]
  3. Red Cross Built Exactly 6 Homes For Haiti With Nearly Half A Billion Dollars In Donations [Huffington Post]
  4. Red Cross Exec Doesn’t Know What Portion Of Donations Go To Harvey Relief [NPR]
  5. Report: Red Cross Spent 25 Percent Of Haiti Donations On Internal Expenses [NPR]
  6. Seriously, guess where I found all of those in two solid minutes of searching? Google. Even better, they didn’t charge me a penny for it.

Stop wanting things to be spoonfed to you. While you waited for someone to link you to sources, you could’ve done it yourself and already donated to people who desperately need it.

Because people are also asking where to donate instead of the Red Cross:

  1. MercyCorps [89% rating on Charity Navigator]
  2. Heart To Heart International [97% rating on Charity Navigator]
  3. Direct Relief [100% rating on Charity Navigator]
  4. Habitat For Humanity [83% rating on Charity Navigator // Because with islands like Barbuda 90% destroyed and French St. Martin said to be 95% destroyed then people are going to need homes built]
  5. Catholic Relief Services [90% rating on Charity Navigator // For those who would want to donate to a religious organization]

If there is a note or comments section on their donation page please do let them know that you would want your money to go to their Caribbean relief efforts. Houston and Florida have the US government backing them in whatever they will need but these islands will have very little except for these charities to fall back if they have any hope of rebuilding what seems to be entire countries in some cases. For the people who lost everything even a few bucks will go a long way.

For the most part I would suggest staying away from privately launched GoFundMes unless you know the person directly. Ultimately, you just never know where those funds are going to end up and if your money will be used wisely. Sure, the same can be said for charity organizations but at least there is a better shot at possibly helping through them. The five listed above are world known and have been studied by charity oversight organizations. It’s as close to perfect as we’re going to get.

The Most Terrifying Villain in Get Out Is White Womanhood by Aisha Harris (full article).

“‘White liberal racism’ has been accurately pinpointed as the movie’s symbolic Big Bad, the villain that, when left unchecked, will destroy us all.”

White women didnt’ ask to be used this way by racists.  We really, really didn’t.

didnt a white girl just get busted for saying she was gangraped by a bunch of black men this year. and then days later came out as a liar? Rhetorical question, yes the fuck she did.

Like… In a post about white women using their victimhood as a weapon, you identify as a white woman and proceed to play the victim. Sit with that. And be a more critical thinker.

The lack of self awareness is staggering

image

if she wasn’t so shite at makeup she could’ve fooled people

image

this is the story of the girl lying about being gang raped  that @sojournerlies was referring to

image

“In 1994 Susan Smith claimed that she’d been carjacked in South Carolina by a black man who drove away with her two young sons (ages 3 years old and 14 months). For nine days, she made dramatic pleas on national television for their rescue.“

image

In 2007 Amanda Knox was accused of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy. Naturally, she was like, “Uh uh, not me!” and blamed Diya “Patrick” Lumumba, her boss, and Lumumba was arrested.

image

In 2010 Bethanny Storro claimed that she was attacked outside a Vancouver, Wash., coffee shop by a black woman who approached her and asked her whether she wanted something to drink. She claimed the woman said, “Hey, pretty girl,” and then threw a cup of acid in her face, disfiguring her. Police went on to investigate and started to think that Storro wasn’t telling the truth. And she wasn’t.

After Storro held a news conference shortly after surgery, with her head wrapped in gauze, she was booked as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, but she canceled the appearance after Oprah’s staff did some digging and things weren’t adding up.

In 2013, in an exclusive interview with ABC News, Storro discussed how she used the acid on herself in a failed suicide attempt because of a then-undiagnosed mental illness called body dysmorphic disorder. The illness causes an obsession with minor or imagined physical flaws. She admitted that when she was a national story, she felt that she “mattered.” She said, “In that moment I felt like I was cared for and I mattered.” She also claimed that she didn’t mean to blame it on anyone else. Right.

source for these 3 stories here x (i only put the women/’recent’ liars, the whole list has a lot more disturbing lies and terrifying outcomes for Black people who were falsely accused)

this is probably the most infamous case, screenshot taken of this article x

White Woman Claims She Was Robbed By Black Man Then Arrested For Lying x

so get your head out of your ass and stop wailing when we’re called out on racism and look around you instead of trying to make excuses for yourself/ourselves and try to silence Black folks

White women and their feminism speaks to agency of a woman and their choices but the minute it’s about racism, it’s all about how they were tricked, forced, or manipulated into being racist and how the real culprit is white men. Like they break their backs to play the victim even if it means they use the same sexist tropes

lowkey terrified of ever visiting the usa because i have no idea how tipping works

If you are in a sit down restaurant with servers, it is polite to tip 15-20% of the bill at the end of the meal. Waitstaff are paid a pittance wage on the expectation it will be made up in tips. This is extremely fucked up but that’s how it is. Please do not withhold tips to American servers unless the service was truly horrible.

If you have food delivered to you at home or hotel or something, it’s polite to tip the delivery person a few dollars. They usually make minimum wage and don’t get much for gas/wear and tear on their vehicle.

Quick service fast food places like McDonald’s and Wendy’s are generally not tipped.

Some delis, coffee shops, and other small independent establishments may have a jar on the counter labelled TIPS. It is not required to tip but if you want to drop a dollar or your change in because you like the place they appreciate it. The tip jar is typically split up by the workers at the end of the day.

I don’t know how many followers I have outside the US, but I’m a server and I appreciate someone putting this into simple words without bias. Just for information’s sake.

Do not underestimate the flooding in Texas right now.

Houston has had over 18" of rain fall over the past 24 hours and they’re expecting at least 2ft more in the next 24-36 hours. They are underwater. The rain isn’t going to relent until at least Wednesday.

There are still tornado watches going up, and with shelters and basements under water this will make things worse.

We need to rally together and donate to relief efforts. The Weather Channel has already said that this will be the worst flooding event in US history.

Donate to local crisis control resources. Please share any reliable links and numbers you have. A lot of peoples’ go-tos are The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army, but if you want to avoid those large groups it will be better to donate to local resources. You can also donate to Save the Children, Samaritan’s Purse, and Heart to Heart International.

Coalition for the Homeless runs the shelters in the city of Houston https://www.homelesshouston.org/take-action/donate/

Donate to Corpus Christi’s children’s hospital, which is directly in the path of the storm. http://www.driscollchildrens.org/

Texas Diaper Bank is making disaster relief kits, and you can donate at http://www.texasdiaperbank.org

Feeding Texas is a network of food banks that will need assistance https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/feeding-texas

Please share this and get the word out.

Also don’t forget Portlight

They’re getting disabled folks out who’ve been left stranded.
